Inspecting and maintaining fall protection systems: Deadlines, obligations, and documentation

Most people know that fall protection systems must be inspected. But when exactly, by whom, and what needs to be documented during the inspection is unclear to many companies. This overview summarizes the essential inspection obligations for common fall protection systems.

Why inspection obligations are so important

A fall protection system that is not regularly inspected can fail at the crucial moment. Corrosion on metal parts, wear-related weakening of straps, damaged couplings, or loose ballast on flat roof parapets – these are not uncommon, but rather the normal result of use and weather conditions. Regular inspections ensure that the system is always ready for use.

In addition, inspection obligations have a liability dimension: anyone who can prove that their system has been regularly and correctly inspected is in a much better position in the event of damage than someone who cannot provide any documentation.

Temporary Flat Roof Safety Systems (DIN EN 13374)

There is no legally prescribed inspection frequency for freestanding railings and ballast weights on flat roofs. DGUV Information 201-056 recommends an inspection for permanently installed systems at least every 24 months. In addition, the system should be inspected: after severe storms or snow loads, after mechanical impact (e.g., vehicle collision or fall), and after prolonged storage before the next use.

What needs to be checked during the inspection: completeness of all system parts, condition of couplings and connecting elements, condition and weight of ballast elements, correct post spacing and railing configuration, legibility of markings.

Mobile Anchor Devices (EN 795)

Mobile anchor points according to EN 795 must be inspected by a competent person at least once a year. In addition, a visual inspection must be carried out by the user before each use. After a fall, the anchor device must be immediately taken out of service and inspected.

The strictest inspection requirements apply to PPE against falls: Visual inspection by the wearer before each use, at least annual inspection by a competent person, immediately take out of service and have inspected after each fall (even if the equipment appears undamaged), observe manufacturer's specifications for service life (textile parts typically max. 10 years from date of manufacture).

Permanent Anchor Devices (EN 17235)

Fixed anchor points and cable fall protection systems must be inspected at least every 12 months by a person qualified by the manufacturer. DGUV 201-056 recommends shorter intervals for heavily used systems. After impacts that could have affected the system (storm, snow, vehicle collision), an extraordinary inspection is required.

Documentation: What to keep

For all systems, the following applies: inspections must be documented. The documentation should at least include: date of inspection, inspected system parts, result of the inspection (OK / not OK / replaced), name and qualification of the inspector. These documents should be kept as long as the system is in operation – but at least until the next inspection.
