Anyone who regularly works on flat roofs knows the problem: you need a fall protection system that can be set up quickly, won't damage the roof membrane, and can be packed back into the van at the end of the day. Freestanding, temporary protection systems are designed precisely for this – yet they differ significantly in terms of construction, application, and suitability for everyday use.

What a temporary flat roof safety system must achieve
The core idea is simple: the system should prevent people from stepping over the roof edge. This does not require anchoring into the roof structure; instead, ballast weights, clamps, or a combination of both hold the railing in position.
Standard DIN EN 13374 defines what such a system must achieve. For flat roofs with a slope of up to 10°, protection class A applies: the side protection must withstand static loads but not absorb a free fall. This makes the construction lighter and more affordable – and particularly suitable for temporary use.

Freestanding railings with concrete ballast
This is the most commonly used system on German flat roofs. Aluminum stanchions are erected at intervals of 1.5 to 2.5 meters, weighted down with concrete elements, and connected with tubes or mesh panels.
The concrete elements are the decisive factor: too few or too light ballasts, and the system will tip over in wind. Too many, and transport becomes a problem. Reputable manufacturers provide precise information on the required amount of ballast depending on the setup situation and wind zone – this should be calculated, not estimated, in case of doubt.

Parapet clamping systems
Where a sufficiently high and stable parapet is available, clamping systems can be an alternative to ballasting. They mechanically grip the top of the parapet and do not require weights – but presuppose a suitable parapet.
Important: Not every parapet is suitable for clamping systems. Parapets that are too narrow, dilapidated, or have a delicate coating can be damaged or may not withstand the load. The load-bearing capacity should be assessed before use.
Typical errors in practice
- Insufficient ballast: Manufacturer's instructions not followed, wind load underestimated
- Incorrect stanchion spacing: The standard sets maximum spacing – if exceeded, the system loses its approval
- Missing toeboards: The railing itself does not protect against falling objects, but a toeboard at the bottom does
- No assembly log: Who assembled the system and when should be documented
- Uneven ground ignored: Gravel fill or pipes can impair stability

This depends on the length to be secured and the chosen system. A complete system for 10 to 15 meters of roof edge costs in the mid-three to low-four-figure range, depending on the manufacturer. Cheaper alternatives from DIY stores often do not meet the requirements of DIN EN 13374.
